After a second explosion ripped through a mine shaft in Greymouth, New Zealand, the 29 miners trapped underground were declared dead. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, has promised an investigation into these deaths. In my opinion, it's been interesting to note the drastically different outcomes of the Chilean mine incident and this one. With Chile's major success in saving 33 miners, this occurrence has ended on an even more tragic note, where it is unknown if even the bodies will be recovered.

In less than 4 days, 22 people have been killed and 153 arrested in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A result of drug-gang violence, the murders and arrests were sparked by the transfer of prisoners across state borders. As Brazil prepares to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, all eyes are on crime in the country, as many have already questioned whether or not Brazil is ready to handle these major events.

The United Nations has reported a decrease in new H.I.V. Infections in Africa, citing a 20% decrease in new infections since the late 1990s. Major progress in Africa has been questionable, but certain countries are taking steps in order to combat this major health issue. New medications and treatments are being developed, in addition to the implementation of various education and awareness programs across the continent, but today over 33 million people are estimated to be living with H.I.V., a number that has never been higher.
